The Citroen C4 Cactus is like that pair of twins you remember from school, where they looked identical but had completely different personalities.

The diesel Cactus is like the twin that was all smiles at first, but would book spill you in the hallway when they noticed you were in a hurry.

The automatic transmission paired with the Cactus diesel promises to do the job on paper, but its cumbersome single clutch cuts acceleration for what seems forever, a situation only amplified when you’re in a hurry.

The diesel Cactus’ twin sibling is the three-cylinder petrol manual version, which suggests it will be more cooperative if you’re willing to take it to the Debutant Ball, or put in the hard yards and change gears yourself.

Unfortunately for the Cactus, Australia has an overwhelming preference for autos. But if you are a manual buyer, does the manual petrol Cactus right all the auto diesel’s wrongs?
